Answers to our Most Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from my doctor for Massage Therapy?

It’s always encouraged to check with your doctor before trying new therapies, especially if you have an illness or are on medications.
*Some extended health providers require that you first get a referral from a doctor before you can be reimbursed for your first massage therapy treatment. This is mostly a formality and you would only need to get a referral from your doctor once a year.

Do you accept Medical Service Plan (MSP)?

We do accept MSP, but we are what’s considered “opted out.” This means you will be charged the full amount for your massage upon your visit and we will fill out the necessary paperwork for you to receive a reimbursement of $23 per massage. Those who qualify with MSP receive reimbursement of $23 per massage up to 10 massages per year from the BC government.
*Please note that only those who qualify for MSP assistance receive this benefit. You must check with MSP to see if you qualify. What clothing will I need to remove for my massage?
Clients undress to their level of comfort and will have the privacy to do so. You will always be covered with a sheet during your treatment and only the areas that your therapist is working on directly will be undraped. If your preference is to keep your clothing on, your therapist will work over them without using oil or lotion. Please feel open to talk with your therapist about any concerns you have.

Do you offer Prenatal and Postnatal Massage Therapy?

All of our Registered Massage Therapists are qualified to provide prenatal and postnatal massage therapy treatments. Massage Therapy is safe to receive throughout your entire pregnancy provided your primary healthcare provider hasn’t advised against it. A lot of the physiological changes that happen during pregnancy and after can create discomfort in the body and massage therapy is a great way to alleviate these symptoms as you carry and care for your child.
Our studio is equipped with specialized prenatal cushions to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible during your massage treatment.

Why do you need to know what medications I am taking?

In order to ensure a safe and effective treatment your massage therapist needs to know your health history, including any medications or supplements you may be taking. Some medications may present contraindications to massage therapy and may require your therapist to alter their approach to your treatment. We want to ensure you have the best experience possible at Healing Tree Massage & Wellness Studio.

Can I have my Massage Therapy treatment covered under my employer’s extended medical plan? Do you Direct Bill?

Massage Therapy by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) is covered under most employer’s extended medical plans in BC but it is advised that you contact your provider to confirm your coverage prior to your first massage. All of our therapists are RMT’s and can direct bill to Pacific Blue Cross. If you have a different provider we will give you a RMT receipt after your treatment that you can remit to your provider to be reimbursed.

Do you accept Workers Compensation Board (WCB) claims?

We unfortunately do not accept WCB claims but we will provide you with a RMT receipt after payment for your treatment that you can provide to WCB to receive the reimbursement they have arranged with you.

Can I tell my Massage Therapist if I’m feeling uncomfortable during my massage?
Absolutely. Your comfort is our top priority. We always ask for your feedback during your massage and welcome any requests you may have regarding change in pressure, temperature, lighting, music or positioning. Please do not hesitate to ask us how we can increase your comfort.

Can my children receive Massage Therapy?

Massage Therapy is safe at all ages and can be highly beneficial for children. They face similar mental and physical stressors as adults. Whether it be from school or from physical activities, Massage Therapy can help reduce stress, anxiety, muscular tension and injury from sport. We always welcome the parent into the treatment room to help make their children feel comfortable. If you have extended health coverage for Massage Therapy and would like to book a massage for your child, enquire with your provider as your child is most likely covered under your plan as well.
